Whoopie Pies Recipe


An authentic Lancaster County treat!


  • 4 eggs
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 4 tsp. salt
  • 4 tsp. vanilla
  • 2 cups sour cream
  • 2 cups cocoa
  • 7 cups flour
  • 4 tsp. baking soda
  • 2 cups hot water
  • Filling:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 4 tbsp. flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • pinch of salt


Cream together eggs, vegetable oil and sugar until light and fluffy. Add salt, vanilla, and sour cream; beat well. Combine cocoa and flour. Mix baking soda i hot water. Add dry ingredients to creamed ingredients, alternating with hot water. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto a greased cookie sheet, Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minuets or until tops spring when lightly touched. Cool completely before putting them together with filling.
Filling Instructions:
Beat shortening, butter, and flour together with an electric mixer until well combined. Add remaining ingredients and beat until fluffy, approximately 10 minutes.
