Soft Molasses Cookies Recipe


A soft, delicious cookie similar to the one we make in the Kitchen Kettle Village Bake Shop.


  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1/2 lb. light brown sugar
  • 2 c. dark brown molasses
  • 2 c. buttermilk
  • 6 c. flour
  • 1 Tbsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. ginger
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 egg, beaten, use to brush top of cookie before baking
  • Optional sugar mixture for topping:
  • 2/3 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/3 c. brown sugar together
  • Mix together and place on cookies before baking.


Cream shortening and sugar. Add molasses and buttermilk. Stir together flour, baking soda, ginger and cinnamon. Add to creamed mixture. Do not overmix. Drop cookie dough by the tablespoon, onto a greased cookie sheet. Brushing tops with beaten egg before baking. May also top with sugar mixture. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.
