Autumn Apple Butter Bars Recipe

This recipe was created for the 2012 Tailgating Festival here at Kitchen Kettle for a cooking demo, and visitors loved it!

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 c. sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp. cloves or ginger
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. butter or regular margarine, softened
  • 1 c. granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 3/4 c. buttermilk or sour milk
  • 1 1/2 c. Kitchen Kettle Spiced Apple Butter
  • Confectioners' sugar for the top

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 13x9x2 baking pan and set aside. Sift flour, baking soda, and spices; set aside. In large bowl beat butter, granulated sugar, and eggs until light and fluffy. At low speed, beat in flour mixture, in fourths, alternately with buttermilk, in thirds, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Stir in apple butter; mix well. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake 50 minutes, or until surface springs back when gently pressed. Cool in pan 15 minutes. Remove from pan; cool thoroughly on rack. To serve, cut into 12 squares and sprinkle with confectioners' sugar.
