Kitchen Kettle Village Announces the "Bake a Pie/Save a Farm" Best Rhubarb Dessert contest on May 19th

Intercourse, PA May 2, 2018- It’s time to get creative in the kitchen and save a farm in the process! The 35th Annual Kitchen Kettle Village Best Rhubarb Dessert Contest, which benefits Lancaster Farmland Trust, is now open for entrant registration! Participants could win the Best of Show title and $250 in cash. Additionally, a “Judge’s Choice” winner will be named and the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the Brighton Collectibles store in the Village. The contest will take place on Saturday, May 19th as part of Kitchen Kettle’s Annual Rhubarb Festival (May 18th & 19th). Categories and Rules:

  1. All entrants must make a pie, cake or other dessert and include some form of rhubarb.
  2. There are 3 categories: Rhubarb Pie, Rhubarb Cake and Rhubarb Dessert. Entrants may enter in up to two categories and are limited to two entries per category for judging, however, they may donate as many pies, cakes or desserts as they like to raise money for the Lancaster Farmland Trust.
  3. The recipe, name, address and phone number must be included with each entry. Entrants do not need to be present to win. Recipes must be typed or neatly printed.
  4. All entries are to be in a disposable container – containers will not be returned.
  5. All recipes will become the property of Kitchen Kettle Village and can be used as part of public relations efforts in promoting the Rhubarb Festival.
  6. Entrants may pre-register by calling Kitchen Kettle Village at 768-8261 or 800-732-3538, online at https://www.kitchenkettle.com/events/rhubarb-festival-baking-contest.asp or by mailing a registration form to: P.O. Box 380, Intercourse, PA 17534. Pre-registration is preferred, but not mandatory.
  7. Entries must be taken to the registration area near the stage at Kitchen Kettle Village by 9:30am on Saturday, May 19, 2018.

 

Judging:

  1. The judging of all entries will begin promptly at 10AM on Saturday, May 19, 2018.
  2. A panel of local judges will review all entries. All entries will be judged on the following criteria:
    • Flavor (and the use of rhubarb)
    • Texture and outside characteristics/appearance

Kitchen Kettle Village will use a common judging practice in which each dessert will be sampled by one or more judges, and desserts making it into the “Best of Show” category will be sampled by all judges.

  1. Entries will be offered for sale immediately following the judging of the dessert contest. All proceeds will benefit the Lancaster Farmland Trust.

 

Prizes:

  1. Best of Show prize earns $250.00 in cash.
  2. Awards of gift certificates will be given for first, second and third place in each category, along with award ribbons.
  3. All desserts being submitted will be part of a “Judge’s Choice Appearance” award. The panel of judges will select the top five rhubarb creations based on appearance and then select the best-looking rhubarb creation. One “Judge’s Choice” winner will be named and the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate to the Brighton Collectibles store in the Village.
